The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of the Republic of Korea announced today that it will conduct a comprehensive inspection of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft in the country.
This announcement comes a day after a Jeju Air B737-800 passenger aircraft crashed while attempting to land at Muan International Airport, located approximately 290 kilometers southwest of Seoul.
The accident occurred when the aircraft, apparently due to a landing gear failure, landed without its wheels deployed.
As a result, the aircraft slid off the runway and collided with the outer wall of the airport, causing the fuselage to break apart and catch fire.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of the B737-800 model, which is widely used by several low-cost airlines in South Korea.
Jeju Air, the airline involved in the accident, operates the largest fleet of B737-800 aircraft in the country, with a total of 39 aircraft.
Other domestic airlines also use this model: T’way Air has 27 aircraft, Jin Air has 19, Eastar Jet operates 10, Air Incheon has four, and Korean Air maintains two.
The decision by the South Korean Ministry of Transport reflects a rapid response to the potential aviation security crisis and seeks to ensure public confidence in the country’s commercial aviation.
Inspections will be conducted with the intention of identifying and rectifying any possible aircraft failures, thereby ensuring the safety of passengers.
This incident highlights the importance of proper maintenance and rigorous oversight of aircraft, especially those that are essential to domestic air transport.
